Terror on the Farm

Mortimer Davorus

MortimerDavorus.png.f8f7cc5349a52ebd5bea181cb75795fe.pngFrom the hayloft, Mort was unaware that anything was happening until he saw his companions leap from their carts and rush off out of his view around the barn. With nervous excitement, he climbed down from his perch, his arms and legs suddenly feeling stiff and heavy during the descent. He grabbed a pitchfork he had leaned against a nearby post the night before and was about to dash off through the barn in the same direction he had seen the others go when he hesitated.

Was it fear?

The gruesome description of the creature Aelric had provided had certainly been in his thoughts. So had when Gemlia described him as "frail" yesterday. He felt it was an apt description of himself and had taken no offense at the time. Yet hours idling atop a pile of hay had left his mind to wonder.

What had she really meant to say at that moment before she said: frail?

Mort shook his head to clear these intrusive thoughts. He focused on the facts.

Burrowing. Silence. Two holes last time. Aelric had mentioned there had been more.

He knew what he needed to do.

Gripping the pitchfork in both hands, Mort charged out of the barn in the opposite direction. Once outside the barn, he could hear what had alarmed the others. He cautiously made his way to the cart that was closest to the corral.

If one of these things was going to pop up to take the bait while the rest were at the corral or attempt a surprise attack on them from behind, he was ready!

https://i.imgur.com/AoyctJI.jpgOh, check it out.  At horrible sound of impending mystery, Gray jumps into action!

“Yes, friends.  Dwarf time indeed.  Everyone’s time, for that this is  OUR time to shine.  Or something!

”Let’s do it, friends!”

Whatever IT happens to be!

The party leaves the cover of the wagons and advance slowly toward the fallen cow and the stomach churning munching sounds.

Before they can get more than a few feet from the wagons, a slight tremor rumbles the ground. As the companions look on, a form rises up from behind the dead cow. It rises up several feet into the nighttime air. As the creature rises, a monstrous maw splits open. Rows of dagger like teeth drip blood and chunks of entrails. Surrounding the maw is a mass of writhing, sinewy tentacles. Each appendage is thick and muscular, tapering to razor-sharp tips, as if honed for some unknown purpose.

As the tentacles unfurl, the monstrous form of the creature is finally revealed.

The tentacles undulate and sway like writhing serpents.

A putrid stench fills the air.

And there, in all of its hideous glory, stands the thing of nightmares!

The creature rearing up didn't take Gemlia off-guard. She'd expected...something vile and wicked, but was dead-set on bashing it with her mace. The smell was definitely a bit much for her, though.

"Surround it before it burrows!" she shouted as she closed the distance, mace held high. As she neared it, she internally prayed to the Forge to give her the strength and luck to survive.

Gemlia closes the distance to the creature and delivers a blow from her mace. The dwarf finds her mark and opens up a wound that gushes brown ooze. The creature's maw opens and convulses in apparent agony.

OocMort then Mordel.

MortimerDavorus.png.f8f7cc5349a52ebd5bea181cb75795fe.pngMort gasps at the hideous sight of the creature. His hands go ice cold and the pitchfork slips from his grasp. His plan to hang back at the carts instantly fades. His terror fills him with an intense desire to kill this abomination. He has a new plan. Kill it with fire!

"Torch!" he shouts. "Someone give me a torch!"

Mort searches his gear for a bottle of lantern oil.

OOCMort plans to douse the creature with oil - most likely a throw from a distance just out of reach of those tentacles. He has two bottles of lantern oil.

If he is unable to get a torch, then he'll put the second bottle of oil in his lantern. His plan will be then to light the lantern with his flint/steel and throw the lantern to ignite the creature.

Mordel halts his charge toward the great tentacled beast and tosses a torch Mort's way.

Mort catches the torch and tucks it into his belt. He then produces one of his bottles of lantern oil. As Mort prepares the bottle for the dousing of the creature...

Gray rushes forward and strikes out with his sword. A sound of pain and rage bursts forth from the monsters nightmare maw as it's body is opened up spilling more if it's lifeblood.

With another bone chilling cry, the creature simultaneously thrusts out tentacles in Gemlia and Gray's direction.

The tentacles are unable to find either of the companions and they manage to dodge away from the reaching appendages.

With a roar and a swing the fierce dwarf buries his axe into plump monster flesh. Brown liquid gushes from the wound. The creature again cries out. It drops to the ground and begins burrowing into the earth.

At the same time, the corral animals start up again. Their agitated cries ring out as they scatter about the corral. And there, where the animals were once huddled together, another one of the creatures rises into the air.

MortimerDavorus.png.f8f7cc5349a52ebd5bea181cb75795fe.pngAs another creature bursts forth from the ground, Mort continues preparing to set one ablaze.

OOCI'm not sure how much Mort can do on his turn, but here is the order of his actions:

- Light the torch with flint/steel.
- Hold the torch in one hand and a bottle of oil in the other.
- Make his way toward the corral, keeping 15 feet away from any monster and trying to get into a position so that he is behind one of them (I assume the new one since the other one is burrowing).
