Ghosts Come Home to Roost?

When the requested lighting arrives, Jessie presses against the far wall of the hallway and slowly and quietly sneaks ten feet forward into the shadows using the darkness to try and hide while straining her sharp eyes and keen halfling hearing to detect any movement or anything unusual in the passageway ahead.

Holding her fancy bow in hand loaded with a razor-sharp arrow, the diminutive rogue readies an action to ambush any foes who present themselves forward as the rest of the party make their way through the tight crack into the larger cavern beyond.

OOC

Ready an ambush

Jessie Tosscobble III's AppearanceJessie is small standing at 2 foot 8 inches and weighing a mere 27 pounds. As such, the lass intentionally keeps her brown hair long to cover her halfling features, which allows the rogue to pass herself off as a small humanoid or even young human or half-elven child when convenient or necessary.

Dressed dark purple clothing, which is overlaid with attractive black leather accoutrements, Jessie keeps the paraphernalia of her 'profession' secreted upon her person, and especially the authorities, except when in use.

Her friendly blue eyes and warm, sincere smile are disarming and allow the lass to paint a picture of a young girl who is completely unintimidating by all appearances, an assumption often made by others which suits her well and which she actively cultivates.

To promote this look of youth or innocence, most of Jessie's weapons, alchemical doodads, pack, and other equipment are kept hidden under her clothing and also by her large heavy dark green cloak.

Maximilian Cornelius Spurbright   Human Wizard from Cormyr

Hearing from Rodin that there's a room on the other side of the crack, Maximilian was immediately curious about what could lie in these ruins, other than dead kobolds and massive dead bees. Feeling certain that he's going to regret it, Maximilian follows the others through the crack in the wall.

OOC

Double Move Action -> Get to the crack, go through the crack, get to a decent place to stand on the other side.

AppearanceMaximilian is a tall, slender, bookish young man with slightly tan skin and the brown hair and eyes common among Chondathans. His clothing is simple and understated, but very well-tailored and well-made, as would befit a noble who isn't attempting to advertise wealth to others. He wears a high-collared, brown woolen overcoat over white collared shirts (often frilled collared shirts). The rest of his clothing is simple, functional, and well-tailored, and he keeps them immaculately clean with prestidigitation. He wears a gold ring with a small ruby set in it on his right middle finger.

Bellow the Roost

As Kethra adjusts to reload her crossbow, Maximillian and Aeruiel, in turn, move to slip through the small crack, struggling some but ultimately making it through and into the darkness beyond, bolstered by Rodin's call. The chamber or corridor they're in is dark, cool and quiet. Unnoticed by all, Jesse slips a few feet forward into the darkness. Kethra is last to join everyone, torch and loaded crossbow in hands. As soon as she passes into what is now clearly outlined as a corridor, Jesse is visible once more and you all finds yourselves gaping in silent wonder for a breath.

The ten foot wide corridor stretches to your left and right. The walls here are covered in smooth plaster and rise fifteen feet to meet in a vaulted ceiling. All are decorated in a continuous marvelous mural that seems to depict a woodland at night. Across the hall and a few feet to your right, a stone door set into the wall and painted dead black breaks the flowing mural. The door has but one decoration: the image of the full moon with a milky white cloud arching overhead.

OOC

Note 1: Yellow is range of bright torchlight, dashed Orange is for those with low-light vision. Only those with low-light vision can see in shadowy illumination 40 ft. beyond the Orange dashed line.

Once the cavern is lit up, Jessie is completely surprised by the surroundings.  Where she had expected kobold filth and refuse were instead beautiful murals depicting a woodland scene at night, which actually made the diminutive halfling homesick for the first time in a very long string of forgotten years.

Nonetheless, this was not fun day at the museum, there was likely an entire tribe of scaley little dragon-folk who wanted to eat their livers and only a fool would forget that, and Jessie was nobody's fool.

Silently motioning for her companions to cover her, the tiny rogue quietly moves over to the stone doorway set with the image of a full moon and a milky white cloud overhead and investigates the portal for traps.

With her gut churning in anticipation, Jessie double-checks the door while also listening at it and, if it's not trapped, then will check to see if the door is unlocked without opening it, saving that for when the 'Tall-ies' are ready.

I don't think they went through the door. As the stairs seem to be blocked by a cave in, I suggest we go the other way and see where the tunnel leads to before we try getting in that door.

Rodin will move down to the corner and glance around to see what he can see down the tunnel to the east.

OOC

Elven Lowlight vision, so he can see 40' a if full lit rather than the normal 20 of the torch.

Will take 10 on Spot and Listen checks for a total of 15 each when not in combat.

It gets a +3 bonus if any of those are applied to Drow or large spiders.

AppearanceRodin stands at 6 feet tall and appears a bit more muscular than the average elf. His skin has a light brownish tan look to it. His hair is brown with streaks of copper highlights through it and hangs down to just touch his shoulders. It normally has a bit of a wild windblown look to it. His eyes are a medium green which reminds most people of the color of leaves. He wears studded leather armor that has been dyed a camouflage pattern of browns and greens. His cloak is held closed by a brooch the shape of a silver arrow with green fletching. Aside from his dagger on his belt, the only weapon he carries is his longbow, which looks a bit thicker and sturdier than most bows.

As he starts to move he spots movement from the stairs.

Heads up guys! Our two kobold friends are hiding in the rocks up on the stairs. Guess I was wrong on which way they went.

He readies an arrow and waits for a good shot.

They are normally pretty devious little guys, so I am guessing there is something down here that they hope we stumble across and have it kill us for them. So please do not touch that door yet. Lets deal with them first.

Aeruiel Moonshadow   Half-Moon Elf Barbarian from Ashabenford

Aeruiel tells Rodin, "I noticed they don't like light that much. Can we use that against them? Maybe launching fire arrows at them?" She readies her bow and arrow to attack at the kobolds once they come into better view. She lights an arrow on the lit torch and readies to fire it past the rubble on the stairs. Her intention is to make the kobolds show themselves so her companions can get better shots at them.

OoC

Someone already has a fire source so could we not burn arrows and fire them at the kobolds? Even if we miss we might be able to [1] see what else might be up there on the stairs by the shadows illuminated, or [2] make it slightly less difficult for the kobolds to attack us from their advantageous position, or [3] just scare them to reveal themselves so others can take better shots at them.

AppearanceFemale half-elf, age 17, blonde, blue eyes, fair skin, 5'-7" tall weight about 125 lbs.

She is described as a willful and free spirited young woman, who likes playing pranks, and flies into fits of rage when bullied.

Glancing up at the symbol above the door, illuminated by the torchlight, Maximilian immediately recognizes it as the holy symbol of Sehanine Moonbow, the elven goddess of death, journeys, and the moon.

"In case anyone doubted that these are old elven ruins, that is the symbol of Sehanine Moonbow, an elven goddess of journeys and the moon," Maximilian said, not mentioning for the moment that she was also an elven goddess of death, though he supposed that was the reason that a room dedicated to a moon goddess would be underground. "Mayhap she'll look favorably on us if we clear a few of these creatures out of a place dedicated to her. I will take all the divine favor I can get," Maximilian said with a slight smile.

Jessie stops what she is doing when Maxy-million warns the group that the pair of kobolds who fled are now hiding behind debris on the western stairs lying ahead of the party and immediately changes her plans with her attention now focused on the steps to the west.

Just as she is about to draw her fancy short bow and move forward toward a small pile of debris on the cavern's floor in an attempt to shrink her frame and use the rocks as partial cover, the diminutive rogue is pelted by sling stones from ahead and nearly killed.

This causes Jessie to momentarily freeze motionless as the injured Halfling focuses her keen eyes and sharp ears on her immediate surroundings, watching and listening for movement, while her comrades attack the enemy.

Bellow the Roost

Jesse take an almost immediate, and mayhap stereotypical for a rogue, fascination with the revealed door but before she can even move towards it, things quickly turn dangerous! Almost as quick as Rodin can speak his warning, a swarm of the little scaly humanoids seems to materialize in the dim light of the torch at one end of the hallways and several more rise from the rubble on the opposite far end of the hallway, though only Rodin and Aeruiel can make them out at this point. Immediately, Rodin lets loose an arrow from his finely wrought bow, but the crowded confines make it difficult to aim at the small creatures and the arrow strikes some of the larger rubble. Maximilian, having prepared a breath earlier, does his best to toss a small flask at the kobolds he can now see. His sim is off however, the object being awkward to fling and his practice lacking, coupled with the distance to the creatures and the flask bursts into flames along the muraled wall to the south, leaving a burned scorch mark on the ancient mural. Aeruiel glances at the torch in Kethra's hand, despite her lack of formal training, she quickly assesses that lighting her arrow using the torch will take longer than she'd like and is instead swift to loose an arrow as well and it sinks into the shoulder blade of one of the diminutive creatures, eliciting a loud yelp of pain.

Beady red eyes gleam in the dim light and darkness and a swarm of small pebbles is loosed at your tight gathering. Several find their mark, some almost knocking Jesse out cold, while others glance off plastered walls. Maximilian and Kethra both suffer minor wounds on their body, while Aeruiel is fortunate when a stone that might have knocked her out strikes the edge of her head and grazes her badly!

Maximilian winces from the pain of the rock that struck him. Barely larger than a pebble, it still hurt enough to alarm him. He clearly couldn't just remain standing in the hallway, but he could only see darkness at both ends of the hallway. Rodin had moved to what to Maximilian was the edge of the darkness and had presumably started wailing on something there, but Maximilian couldn't see what or how many kobolds were there.

"Damnation! I would kill them if I could see them," Maximilian grumbled loudly. "If anyone can see beyond the torchlight, tell me where our attackers are hiding!" He put an arm up to block his face from hurled pebbles, waiting to hear any description of the kobolds' whereabouts.
