Well I was barely thirteen when the company man, tried to dig my daddy's grave
It happened on a French owned tanker ship, spilling poison into Galveston Bay
Where the liquid fire filled his lungs and his eyes, silenced any mortal cries
Cold and the grip of death stinging pain, he fought like hell to ...

For the next few years dad was sick as a dog, but he made a recovery just to spite the odds
Settlement came and we moved out of town, where the sky isn't heavy with refinery clouds
Yeah he's still alive he's doing good he's in his fifties
But the moneys running out, and he's pinching for pennies
So I'm goin' for broke with every song I play, 'cause now it's my turn to keep the wolves away

Keep the Wolves Away by Uncle Lucius

Let's try a different one:

Woke up and I bumped my head
Stumped my toe on the edge of the bed
Opened the fridge and the food all gone
Neighbor's damn dog done crapped on my lawn
Hopped in the car and the car won't start
It's too damn hot but I still gotta walk
Behind an old lady in the grocery line
Praying that my card won't get declined
Ah damn, ah damn, ah damn, ah damn
Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man
Ah damn, oh man, ah damn, oh man

Bills by Lunchmoney Lewis

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
When friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

While not quite cheating, I am going to confess that I'm looking over the CD jacket to see what jogs my memory.

11 songs.

Cluster One, What Do You Want From Me, Poles Apart, Marooned, A Great Day for Freedom, Wearing the Inside Out, Take it Back, Coming Back to Life, Keep Talking, Lost for Words, and High Hopes.

Cluster One is an instrumental. So is Marooned, and also I think Coming Back to Life. So that's three I can eliminate, bringing us down to eight.

I know all the words (or, at least, the choruses) to Take it Back, Keep Talking, and I'm familiar with A Great Day for Freedom and What Do You Want from Me, so I'm going to eliminate those four, bringing me down to four.

Now it gets hard.

That leaves me with Poles Apart, Wearing the Inside Out, Lost for Words, and High Hopes.

Wearing the Inside Out feels wrong. Lost for Words also feels wrong. My memory is of a dark song about vulnerability and rejection. So that leaves two.

I have a 50/50 chance of guessing right, so if I get this wrong, I encourage the next person to guess Poles Apart.

But my guess is High Hopes which, funnily enough, I am in possession of those, high hopes that I've guessed correctly.

A spectacle monopolized
The camera's eyes on choice disguised
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?
Yes a spectacle monopolized
They hold the reins and stole your eyes
Or the fistagons
The bullets and bombs
Who stuff the banks
Who staff the party ranks
More for Gore or the son of a drug lord
None of the above f**k it cut the cord
